What is a 40ft reefer container?
A 40ft reefer container is an insulated shipping container with an integrated refrigeration unit. It is used to transport and store temperature-sensitive cargo such as fruit, vegetables, seafood, pharmaceuticals and other perishable products.
The refrigeration unit controls the supply-air temperature. A T-floor distributes cooled air underneath the cargo and helps it circulate throughout the container. Cargo must therefore be loaded correctly, with sufficient space for airflow and without exceeding the indicated load line.
Why is a reefer smaller inside than a dry container?
A reefer has insulated walls, an insulated floor and ceiling and an integrated refrigeration unit. These components reduce its internal length, width and usable volume compared with a 40ft dry container.
The T-floor and required airflow also affect the usable loading height. Cargo should not be packed directly against the refrigeration unit or above the maximum load line, as this can restrict circulation and cause uneven temperatures.
Standard versus high cube 40ft reefers
A high cube container is approximately 30 cm taller externally than a standard-height container. Most modern 40ft reefers are high cube models because the additional height helps compensate for space taken up by insulation and refrigeration equipment.
However, not every 40ft reefer has identical internal dimensions. Different refrigeration units, insulation systems and container series can result in small variations.
