What is a reefer PTI?

What is a reefer PTI?

A reefer PTI, or Pre-Trip Inspection, is a technical inspection performed before a refrigerated container is released for transport. The inspection verifies that the reefer unit, electrical system and temperature controls are operating correctly and that the container can maintain the required setpoint during transit.

At Harbour Reefer Service, incoming reefer containers can be inspected, tested and, where necessary, repaired before they return to operation. A professional PTI helps shipping lines, leasing companies, depots and exporters reduce the risk of technical failures, temperature deviations, cargo damage and delays.

What does PTI mean in shipping?

PTI stands for Pre-Trip Inspection. In reefer shipping, it is a preventive technical check carried out before an empty refrigerated container is assigned to a shipment.

During the inspection, technicians verify that the refrigerated container is fully operational and able to reach and maintain the required temperature. The procedure can vary according to the reefer brand, equipment owner and operational requirements, but it normally includes refrigeration, electrical, functional and visual checks.

How does a reefer PTI work?

Incoming reefer containers are connected to our PTI station, where up to 50 units can be handled simultaneously. This capacity allows Harbour Reefer Service to support customers with multiple containers while maintaining efficient turnaround times.

The inspection starts with a visual and technical assessment of the reefer unit and container. Our technicians check for visible damage, corrosion, wear and other defects that could affect safe or reliable operation.

The refrigeration system is then tested. This includes checking refrigerant pressure, compressor performance, fans, blowers and airflow. Technicians also inspect the electrical supply, controller, sensors and connections for faults or abnormal operation.

A pull-down test verifies whether the reefer can reach the selected temperature setpoint. Temperature stability is monitored to confirm that the unit can maintain the conditions required for temperature-sensitive cargo such as fruit, vegetables, seafood and pharmaceuticals.

Where applicable, the associated genset can also be inspected to verify that it provides a reliable power supply during inland transport or temporary storage.

What is included in a reefer PTI checklist?

A standard reefer container pre-trip inspection can include the following checks:

  • Visual inspection of the reefer unit and container structure
  • Refrigerant level and pressure verification
  • Compressor and cooling-system performance test
  • Blower, fan and airflow inspection
  • Electrical supply, wiring and connection checks
  • Controller, sensor and alarm-code inspection
  • Temperature pull-down and stability test
  • Inspection of the genset when applicable

What happens if a reefer fails the PTI?

If the inspection identifies a technical or structural defect, the reefer should not be released until the problem has been assessed and resolved. Common issues include electrical faults, damaged sensors, insufficient cooling performance, refrigerant problems and worn mechanical components.

Harbour Reefer Service combines PTI with reefer maintenance and repair. Necessary work can therefore be carried out at our facility without moving the container to a separate service provider. After repair, the relevant functions can be tested again before the unit returns to operation.

Is a PTI the same as a certification?

No. A PTI is an operational inspection and not an official container certification. It confirms that the reefer has been technically checked before transport, but it does not replace statutory inspections, certificates or requirements imposed by shipping lines, equipment owners or regulatory authorities.

Frequently asked questions about reefer PTI

What is PTI in shipping?

PTI stands for Pre-Trip Inspection. It is a technical check performed before a reefer container is released for transport to verify that its cooling, electrical and temperature-control systems are working correctly.

What is checked during a reefer PTI?

A reefer PTI normally includes visual checks, refrigeration-system testing, electrical inspection, controller and sensor checks and a temperature pull-down test. The exact procedure can vary by equipment type and owner requirements.

Is a PTI mandatory for reefer containers?

A PTI is not itself a statutory certification. However, shipping lines and equipment owners commonly require an inspection before a reefer is released for a new shipment. Requirements can differ by operator and type of equipment.

How long does a reefer PTI take?

A standard PTI can usually be completed within several hours. The exact turnaround time depends on the inspection procedure, reefer condition and whether repairs or additional testing are required.

What happens when a reefer does not pass the PTI?

The identified defect must be assessed and repaired before the container is released. After repair, the affected systems can be tested again to confirm reliable operation.
